Have you noticed that there seem to be far more vehicles going through the village than was the case a couple of years ago? The numbers increased sharply when Creets Bridge was out of action but have not declined much since it was reopened. Long vehicles are a particular problem as there are several points where they block the lane and cause mini jams, requiring local users to reverse back to passing points. Much of this traffic is long distance and using the lane as a through route. As a result, verges in the village are being destroyed and some residents near the road are complaining of a vibration nuisance.
George Banham and Alan Coppock have taken this matter up with the Area Traffic Manager for North Yorkshire and this has resulted in two developments. A sign has been erected at the bottom of the lane saying it is unsuitable for long vehicles (apparently largely ignored by HGVs) and a traffic survey has been undertaken - which revealed that around 500 vehicles per day go through the village (details of the survey are set out below). A request that a weight restriction be placed on the road has been rejected by the Traffic Manager, despite his admission that the road is unsuitable for the long vehicles now using it. Many people in the village feel that more needs to be done and a detailed vehicle count is proposed in order to gather more data. Anyone interested in this issue can contact Alan Coppock or George Banham for further details.
